Reported by the department of the Public Relations of the University of Maragheh, this meeting was held at University of Maragheh with the presence of a group of Japanese professors under supervision of Professor Masakatsu Miyajima from the University of Kanazawa. This meeting provided a good opportunity to enable the University of Maragheh to pay a visit to the historical monuments of Maragheh, in particular towers and domes, in collaboration with the Cultural Heritage Department. Dr. Mohammad Ali Lotfollahi Yaghein, the chancellor of the University stated: "The significance of historical monuments has always been evident as a treasure for the entire humanity not only in the present but also in the future. The historical city of Maragheh has numerous towers and domes, some of which even date back to 900 years ago. By the spur of time, some have been destructed and some are damaged. Recently, Cultural Heritage Department and other responsible organizations responsible have made some attempts to restore some of these structures. The recent recurrent earthquakes in the western part of Iran and their widespread destructive effects on western parts of the country have called for an urgent attention to the seismic reconstruction of historical structures.”
He also added "Considering the importance of this precious heritage, our major purpose at this meeting is to find scientific solutions for this issue.”
This group, which has already examined other historical structures in Iran such as the great Bazar of Tabriz and Saint Stepanos Church, is currently studying the Church of the Tad'eos (Church) in Chaldoran.
At the end of the meeting, a specialized seminar on the lessons from the past earthquakes in Iran, Japan, Taiwan and Indonesia was held in Oahidi Hall of the University of Maragheh with the presence of Dr. Babak Alinejad, Deputy Minister of Finance and Administration, Dr. Maziar Farzam, head of engineering faculty, other professors, and both undergraduate and postgraduate civil engineering students.
